An Ode to Our Bodies
It happened today-my jeans didn’t fit.
They came really close, but in the end, they wouldn’t zip.
I started to panic and thought “This can’t be right!”
Immediately I regretted dressing up for our date night.
I wanted to feel beautiful, to glow from the inside, out
But thanks to my jeans, all I did was pout.
Why do we get so worked up over this?
Why do we feel less than, looked over, missed?
When beauty feels out of reach, we feel the weight of defeat
Like we’ve done something wrong, or somehow aren’t complete.
But what if this idea, this thought was a lie?
What if true beauty dwells intrinsically in you and I?
That the way our clothes fit or how we look to those outside
Can’t hold a candle to the beauty rooted deep in our lives.
What if beauty was the fact that you laugh from your gut
Or that you’re able to talk your friend out of a rut?
If your beauty was extended in all you create
Would we see it in artwork, in your children, in the home that you make?
If we broaden our thoughts on what beauty defines
Could we be gentler on each other, and our bodies, in kind?
Could we see all of the great things our bodies afford
And perhaps enjoy our lives in them much more than before?
